Natural remedies for diabetes

 : 
Increasingly, the mother nature is being tapped to treat, protect and prevent against many ailments. Some countries are even beginning to patent natural remedies derived from herbs and plants and sell them as potent medicines, besides the science of ayurveda. In diabetes too, besides allopathy and ayurvedic medicines of insulin, etc, some natural remedies are known to provide, and sometimes even prevent, especially the Type 2 diabetes.

Bitter Gourd (Karela )

: The myth that the antidote for diabetes which involves (sweet) sugar, is found in the (bitter tasting) Karela, has some truth in it. Karela is known to increase body’s sensitivity to insulin. 100 mg per kg of body weight of bitter gourd juice is equivalent to 2.5 mg/kg of glibenclamide, an anti-diabetic medicine. Karela has a protein that regulates the breakdown of glucose in the body, the process which is impaired in diabetics. Bitter gourd also contains a compound called lectin which has an insulin-like activity and helps lower blood glucose by acting on peripheral tissues and also by suppressing appetite. Lectin is one of the major contributors to the hypoglycemic index. Karela juice can increase the production of insulin from the pancreas, thus increasing the number of cells responsible for insulin production.

Fenugreek Seeds : 

Commonly called methi, fenugreek seeds when taken in their raw form first thing in the morning,
after being soaked in water overnight, are claimed to have blood sugar lowering effects. These seeds contain an amino
acid that can helps stimulate the production of insulin from the pancreas, also lowering the resistance to insulin. These are especially beneficial in Type 2 diabetes.

Cinnamon 

: After much research, it has been proved that the sensitivity of insulin and control of blood glucose can be enhanced in the body by consuming 1⁄2 teaspoon of cinnamon daily. By improving the resistance of insulin, it can be beneficial in controlling weight also, thereby aiding the diabetics agenda of keeping their weight under control. This condiment can lessen the emptiness of the stomach, which will further disallow the sugar in the blood from peaking to alarming
levels. Besides, cinnamon is also known for its effect on checking triglycerides, blood pressure, and the bad cholesterol.
Vitamin C

 : While vitamin C has been hailed as a potent immunity building vitamin and its antioxidant properties, its effects on diabetics is also worthy of mention. The raised blood sugar levels in diabetics can cause of oxidative reaction in the body. The free radicals generated as a by product of oxidation process can result in dangerous conditions in the body as, heart diseases, cancer, arthritis, etc. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C help reduce chances of atherosclerosis, which is a medical condition commonly found in diabetics.

 : To make chapattis, use equal proportions of wheat, barley (bajra) and gram (kala channa). This dough is known to keep the blood sugar levels under check.

  • Jamun, including its seeds, fruits have been known since long to control blood glucose.
  • Neem leaves, when taken both in mornings and evening, is known to effect sugar levels in a positive manner.
  • Amla is also claimed to treat diabetes.
  • The leaves of Bel fruit, are known to be effective.
  • Garlic, ginger and onions are best options in curing diabetes.
